Two Versions -One Stencil, Same Four Inks, Different Cardstock

What fun it was to look at Spellbinders Monthly Stencil and try a new technique! Using the same Lisa Horton Metallic and Interference Inks on white cardstock and black card gave completely different looks.

Here is how I created each…remember, the only difference is the color of the cardstock you start with. All inks are Lisa Horton Metallic and Interference Inks.

  • Stencil 1: Sapphire Gold
  • Stencil 2: Opal Blush
  • Stencil 3: Golden Sun
  • Stencil 4: Copper Pot
  • Stencil 5: Crushed Velvet

When finished I dried them with a heat gun to be sure they did not smudge. I took paper from my collection and found the best offsetting color to frame the card front. I trimmed the stenciled fronts slightly and then added foam tape to lift them off the solid front.

I found on lent itself to be in horizontal orientation and the other looked better in vertical orientation. I added some mini gems to give a bit of sparkle and added a sentiment from the Better Press Monthly Club.

These were quick and easy cards and LOTS of fun to see how the inks reacted. I hope you like this. If you chose to do this similarly please tag me @pennypynnonen on Instagram. I’d love to see what combinations you come up with also.

Stitching Up Paper Magic: Spellbinders Stitching Die of the Month – A Must-Have for Crafty Hands!

Hello creative souls!

I’m so excited to share with you a project I recently completed using the Spellbinders Stitching Die of the Month. If you’re a fan of stitching, paper crafting, or just love adding texture and depth to your cards and projects, this is a great one for you.

A handmade card featuring bright orange and green floral designs, accented with various leaves. The card has an embossed background and a sentiment reading 'hello' and 'GOURD-GEOUS'. It is displayed on a clear stand against a backdrop of decorative pumpkins and flowers.

This month’s Stitching Die of the Month is all about faux embroidery brought to life through paper and thread. The set includes beautifully detailed dies that are pre-pierced for stitching, making it super beginner-friendly—even if you’ve never picked up a needle before. And just in time for the fall season we have some gourds/pumpkins.

For today’s project, I created a layered 5″x 6.5″ card.

Supplies Used:

  • Spellbinders Large Die of the Month – Stitching Die Set
  • Spellbinders Platinum Die Cutting Machine
  • Ivory cardstock
  • Embroidery floss (DMC green)
  • Foam adhesive
  • Sentiment and leaf dies that came with the set

A little Silly, A little Fun, A little Simple, A little Complex

This month’s Spellbinder’s Club Kits have it all… you can really create a variety of cards with this nautical themed set. Let’s just get into it.

Silly

This Walrus is so playful! He just makes you smile! The Die of the Month also includes a little bird with flags that could be added to create more fun. Here’s how to recreate my card:

  1. The background is created with patterned paper from my stash. It is run through the die cutter with the 3D Embossing Folder of the Month. TIP: Spritz the paper first with water to soften and give a deeper impression from the embossing folder. Trim to 3.75″ x 5′.
  2. Die cut all the pieces of the Walrus from the the Die of the Month set. I used Spellbinders Fog gray for the body, Spellbinders Anchor darker gray for his face, black for wiskers and nose. His shirt is a plaid with a solid jacket with a beanie to match his jacket. The pipe is made from a metallic brown paper from Michaels.
  3. Glue the pieces of the Walrus together and put a block on top to let it dry.
  4. Stamp all the sentiments from The Clear Stamp of the Month and use the coordinating die set to cut them all out. Now they are ready to go wherever you put them.
  5. On your A2 card base, adhere the background.
  6. Pop up your Walrus with foam squares – lots of them — then attach to card front.
  7. Add the sentiment and you have a very fun card that’s quick and easy.

Fun

This fun card has a special element of the Wheel spinning around and around!

  1. Using the Stitching Die of the Month cut two of the half wheels from wood grained paper. TIP: If you don’t have this you can create the look by dragging an brown ink cube across white paper.
  2. Using circle dies from any company, cut according to diagram above. TIP: Cut whole thing twice. Then cut 1/2″ circle at least 6 times more.
  3. Take the smallest circles – 1/2″ diameter – at least 8 and glue them on top of each other. Let dry completely.
  4. Glue the wooden paper pieces onto the white wheel. This helps to give stability to the wheel. TIP: Cut two of the background white wheels for extra strength – see #2. Let it dry completely.
  5. Using the bird dies that come with this set, die cut your bird in whatever colors you choose. TIP: You can also cut all in white and use alcohol markers to color the different parts.
  6. Glue your bird together and let dry completely.
  7. Using the Summertime Waves Embossing folder from June 2024 clubs, run a light blue piece of cardstock through the die cutting machine. Cut to 5″x 5″.
  8. Cut a navy or blue piece of cardstock 5.25″ x 5.25″. Glue this onto a 5.5″ square card base. Then glue on the embossed Waves piece.
  9. Without gluing, arrange the wheel, and the center tower of 8 small circles on the front of the card to be sure the wheel will be completely on the card front. Glue down ONLY the 8 small circle tower. Set your wheel over this and spin to be sure the wheel does not get caught anywhere. Over the circle tower glue the bird, again being sure the wheel will spin and not be glued down.
  10. Add your sentiment from the Clear Stamp of the Month set. On one rung of the wheel stamp or write SPIN so your recipient knows what to do. VOILA

Complex

Oh there is SOOO much in this Large Die Set of the Month. I only touched a part of it but here is what I did.

Create Stunning Butterfly Cards with Better Press

Do you love butterflies? Their array of colors are anything from muted to showy to glistening to electric. The brighter the better for me — and I love the jewel tones!

This first card is using watercolor paper with the butterfly and the sentiment on the Better Press of the Month from Spellbinders. Also used is Altenew Obsidian black ink. Spellbinders has wonderful cotton papers that will give a great impression for all your Better Press plates. Yet if you run out, fell free to use a watercolor paper…thicker than cardstock that will show impression and clearly take the ink. This is just another way to stretch your supplies.

The extra gift with the Deluxe Caboodle kits this month is a stencil to color the butterflies. I used the stencils with Distress inks of Peacock Feathers, Twisted Citron, and Squeezed Lemonade to make a bright and cheery butterfly.

The second card I stepped up a bit to combine some of the Club kits of the Month. The butterfly is the Better Press Club of the Month with Distress Peacock Feathers, Tumbled Glass, and Salvage Patina. The sentiment is also from the Better Press set.

The backgrounds were fun to add by taking vellum and the cardstock and running it through the die cutting machine with the Embossing Folder of the Month. I love the texture it give and continuity by having the vellum show behind the cardstock. And the butterfly stands out nicely against the darker cardstock.

Once assembled, use whatever bling you have to jazz up the card.

This last card was mentioned in a previous post showing how the butterfly can fit with the Stencil of the Month. I just love how Spellbinders uses their kits to create a theme or mix and match to give a huge variety of choices for makers.

How will you mix and match the club kits? I’d love to see what you do. Please tag me at @pennypynnonen on IG or leave a comment on foldedwithcare.com.

Thanks for visiting and come back again! Don’t forget to get your Club kits between the 6th and 27th of each month. Spectacular deals!

Small but Mighty Die of the Month from Spellbinders

Don’t you just love the many colors of dragonflies in the world? They can be so striking with vibrancy! Using Spellbinders Small Die of the Month I wanted jewel tones to make this guy shine! This die set will allow you to cut multicolored wings or solid wings making it very versatile.

I used some turquoise cardstock to cut the solid wings, then added a bit of ink blending to the inside tips for dimension.

The outline is done in gold metallic cardstock.

At this point I stopped to figure out design of a card. The simplest thing became my inspiration — an already cut oval from light purple cardstock. Hmmm, let’s jazz it up a bit! I took Distress Wilted Violet ink and blended around the outside of the oval. That led to –oh, lets make the flowers a deep purple! Oh, and then I can make the dragonfly’s head purple to match the flowers. Using purple paper I cut out all the tiny pieces. I decided the center of flowers should be darker so I, again, used some wilted violet ink over the purple cardstock just for these centers.

The background is made with the 3D Embossing Folder of the Month on some vellum. I love the look of vellum embossed…gives so much texture but doesn’t distract from the colors of the dragonfly.

The sentiment was cut out once in white cardstock and once in gold metallic cardstock then glued to give a bit more dimension.

This turned out to be my favorite Club card for this month. Hope you like it! Club kits are available from the 6th of the month to the 27th of the month. And don’t forget the great deal of the whole Deluxe Caboodle!

What colors would you choose for your dragonfly?

Crafting Adventures with Spellbinder Clubs, highlighting Stencils of the Month

Don’t you just love the excitement of a new crafter seeing the results of stenciling? I had the pleasure of spending time with my five-year-old granddaughter this past weekend. They live out of state from us so seeing them is rare. Her brother’s birthday was Sunday. So while her parents went to a show, I got to craft with her.  She used the Stencils of the Month from Spellbinders both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday we followed the coloring that showed on the Spellbinders page with pink, yellow and green.

We created the background using Distress ink cubes from Ranger:

Stencil 1= Spun Sugar

Stencil 2= Picked Raspberry

Stencil 3= Squeezed Lemonade

Stencil 4= Ground Espresso

Stencil 5= Twisted Citron

We started with taping the stencil in place, marking the corners to line up additional stencils, then ink blending.  The first stencil didn’t look like much, but each one added to the puzzle picture and the final reveal came after stencil 5. OOOOO, so pretty!

Later I cut the flowered pattern to A2 size. I also cut eight cuts from the Large Die of the Month (DOML) to create a shaker card. I found the best way to enclose multicolored sequins was to add a solid piece of acetate to both sides of the stacked die cuts. Then adding another detailed cut on the top to create the cage.  I used a sentiment from the Clear Stamp and Die set of the Month.

On Sunday she picked out blues and purples from my collection of distress ink cubes.

It was fun to see her choose colors and then blend the ink on each stencil. Then the total reveal at the last stencil!

Since she picked the blues, I decided to choose reds for my flowers. I used

Stencil 1= Barn Door

Stencil 2= Candied Apple

Stencil 3= Festive Berries

Stencil 4= Fired Brick

Stencil 5= Lucky Clover

Again later, I cut the paper to A2 size. It looked very Christmasy, yet I wanted it to look more springlike. I used a butterfly from the Better Press of the Month and extra stencil to compliment the red flowers. I again used a sentiment from the Clear Stamp and Die of the Month and added a couple of red die cut flowers from the Large Die Set of the Month. To add to the flowers, I put white pearl dots in the center of many of the flowers. It turned out very springlike.

Hope you too, can be inspired and wowed with these stencils! And add some fun mixing and matching with other club kits. The Spellbinders Clubs are available for subscription every month from the 6th-the 27th of each month. Sign up now for great savings.

Fun Wax Techniques for Beautiful Holiday Cards

Do you like to think out of the box? Or do you prefer just clean cut? With these Spellbinders Clubs of the Month you can mix and match with this month’s collection and previous month’s collections. For thinking out of the box, I played around with my wax and wax seals to use them in different manners. Let’s go take a look at what came about.

I just love this month’s Glimmer selection. The Christmas lights remind me of when I was young and there weren’t tiny lights then, only the larger bulbs such as these. They were strong and vibrant and made the Christmas tree bright and cheery. This string of lights was easy to do and special with the foil that came with it. Everything sparkles. I colored the lights with alcohol markers from Altenew, cutting the panel to 5.5″ x 3.5″. I also cut the front piece of my card base to match. Inside, I added a 1″ strip of red metallic cardstock that also shows on the front. I do love the sparkle and shine.

This month’s sentiment of “Merry Christmas” also came with the lights plate. It was so easy to foil and cut this out multiple times with lots of different colors of foil…always nice to be prepared for more cards. On this card I used the red foil that would match the side metallic strip. The small red dots I used with leftover wax in my spoon — see more below.

If you don’t want to color the lights, this glimmer plate looks stunning in just gold! Then mounted on a gold piece of cardstock embossed with the regular embossing folder of the month. The green Merry Christmas goes with the homemade tree and green dots.

This is one of the Most Wonderful Times of the Year! We get to play with fall and early holiday products that just whet our whistle to do more. Put on a bit of Christmas music and it adds to the Joy. It was easy to use the 3D Embossing Folder of the Month on some red metallic cardstock. The relief of this is just beautiful with poinsettias, candy canes, and branches. I didn’t want to cover it all up. I took a glimmered branch from July’s Glimmer of the Month, adding it with the Wax Seal of this month to the front. The white embellishments I made with more wax –see below.

Here’s where things really got fun! Play with that wax! I created a green tree just by pouring the hot wax out in a (sort of) triangle shape. Then made lots of dots with some extra wax in the spoon. I also used just red and white wax and created two candy canes. I cut one of them in half so that they would cross but lay together better on the embossed card front. The sentiment on the candy cane card is from the July Glimmer of the month club.

And here’s my palette of wax play in the progress. I have lots of dots of varying sizes, colors, mixed colors, wax seal with different color inset, candy canes, tree, etc. The shapes could be endless. And all those dots became ornaments on the tree, and embellishments on the cards. LOTS of FUN!

I encourage you all to give this play time a try. It’s really easy and I bet you will come up with more intricate details too. I’m going to do the same and see what else I can do.

I hope you have enjoyed play time and also the final cards made with those products. Spellbinder Clubs are a tremendous value! You can order this month’s Club kits from the 6th-27th of the month…Still time to get these. Subscribe and you will get them automatically each month.

Thanks for visiting my page — hope you come again another time.

Big Cats and Pugs

Do you like dogs or cats better? Do you like mutts or purebreds? Do you have more than one? Do you have both? I had a grand time playing with Bibi’s Cats and Pugs collection of dies.

Unfortunately, I am allergic to cats but I still love them…just can’t pet them. My daughter has two calico cats so this cat card is for Emma and Bug.

The dies are big and easy to put together with some scoring to show where the top layering pieces go on the bottom layers. The coloring was where I got creative but found that the Distress inks were easy to use with an almost dry brush. I smushed some ink onto an acrylic block and spritzed it with water. With a fan or straight paint brush I dipped into the ink I created the strokes on the cat parts to look ‘hairy’. I used Distress tea dye and vintage photo inks mostly and might have thrown in a darker brown too. The tea dye ink is great for that reddish brown tone in the calico. For the ears I added a touch of pink (whatever was on my blending brush) then a few strokes of brown – cuz the inside of ears are hairy too.

For the background I used one of my favorite embossing folders from Spellbinders – the Diamond Plaid on some kraft cardstock. There is a base die cut of the cat that allows a small white rim and helps the cat stand out against the background.

I do have a dog…but this GoldenDoodle doesn’t look like a pug at all. LOL So this guy is for my stepson’s Boston Terrier -who is much skinnier than a pug but the coloring could be the same. Meet Toby and Lexi.

I started with black cardstock for the pug… this gives him a black rim to help him stand out from the white background. For his coloring it was just adding black and gray in appropriate spots to be similar in coloring to Toby. Again the layering of the dies were easy with the scored lines on the base cuts.

What do you think? Did I capture the coloring of them both? Show me some pictures of your cats and dogs.

Thanks for visiting my page…please follow and come again.
