Have you ever tried the Blackout Technique? Have you ever played with wax seals to combine colors other than marbling? Try stretching your ‘cardmaking powers’ to include these.
Forest Mushrooms Wax Seal

First, emboss a piece of white cardstock using the Mushroom Embossing 3D Folder. Now turn it over and use the Debossed side of the paper.
- Color the debossed side any way you’d like…watercolors, ink pads with water, or alcohol markers. I used alochol markers.
- Color in any items you’d like. I chose to color everything but the circles as I wanted some white to show through.
- Oh it looked sooooo Bad at this point and I thought I would be throwing this piece of paper away but I continued and I’m glad I did.
- The magic came with using a black ink pad (Altenew Obsidien or any intense black ink,) I took the ink pad directly to the paper and swiped it back and forth covering all the high points of the the debossed paper. The recessed areas showed the white and the colors I used with the alochol markers but covered up all the areas colored “out of the lines”
- I trimmed the cardfront down to 3.75” x 5”.
- Add some red metallic thread criscrossing it over the card front and taping it on the back to stay.
- Add the wax seal – this was black wax with gold and red acrylic pen coloring over the wax. This can be be put on easily with stickers from Spellbinders just meant for this. (TIP: I found that foam tape did not want to stick to the wax and these stickers worked wonderfully).
- I mounted this card front with foam tape onto a gold 4”x5.25” piece of cardstock thus creating a gold frame. I then adhered it to the card base.
- The sentiment is from the June Glimmer of the Month Club
Peony Butterfly Wax Seal

Just look at the depth and topography of this seal! I ventured into the unknown and attempted to put two colors of wax together on one seal. Taking just a small amount of melted blue wax I carefully poured it into the butterfly, then wiped away any extra with a small statue. I then melted pink wax and stamped it keeping the blue butterfly still intact. IT WORKED!
For the card:
- On a white cardbase Splatter the background – I used Altenew Coral Berry Spray but a Distress mica spray would also work.
- Adhere a strip of embossed paper from the Four Pedal 3D Embossing folder with the pedals ink blended — left over from a previous card. Aproximately 1 to 1.5 “ wide.
- Add a sentiment from the Glimmer of the Month June
- Add a butterfly from Summer Day Butterfly stickers
- Attach the wax seal overlaying the top and bottom sections of the card
I sure hope you will stretch yourself and your skills to try these techniques. And DON’T GIVE UP! They are so worth doing but it may take some practice. Please tag me on what you do…on Facebook Penny Pynnonen and on Instagram @pennypynnonen
