Holiday Magic in the Making: Card Crafting with the Grandkids Using Spellbinders’ Merry Moments Kit

There’s something special about gathering around the table to share with family to create some holiday magic. In July, I had the joy of spending a lazy Sunday afternoon with my grandchildren, thanks to the Merry Moments Cardmaking Kit from Spellbinders—and let me tell you, it turned out to be the perfect recipe for connection, creativity, and plenty of smiles. The 10 year old and 7 year old turned into expert card designers.

Setting the Scene

I spread out the Merry Moments kit across the dining room table at my daughter’s house. The two kids wanted to see what it was all about. The kit is packed with festive paper, die cuts, stickers, embellishments, card bases, and even foam adhesive—all beautifully coordinated in cheerful holiday colors. We started by just looking through everything there…it’s all right there in one box, which made it easy for the kids to dive right in without waiting for instructions.

Two handmade Christmas cards displayed on a wooden surface. The left card features a glittery green background with the text 'Merry Christmas' and 'HO HO HO' alongside an illustration of Santa Claus. The right card has a dark green background with the word 'Celebrate' in gold and the word 'Together' in red, featuring two Nutcracker figures and a candy cane with a bow.

Letting Them Lead

Instead of guiding every step, I let each grandchild choose their own card base and said, “Make it yours.” And oh, how they did! One grabbed Santa and the HO HO HO. She played with the layout, trying to add other items. She would look at them but didn’t think it right. Her brother across the table gave a few suggestions and in the end they chose a more simple look.

He decided he liked the tall Nutcracker Soldiers and wanted to have both of them on the card. Plus his theme was to spend Christmas together. So together they were with the three dimensional CELEBRATE and TOGETHER stickers. He added some candy canes. Then we played with some sequins. placing them down before gluing to decide where they should go.

The two of them also helped me to finish out 10 cards.

Then we got a bit fancy with the last one making a little book to open on the card.

A Meaningful Keepsake

At the end of the day, each child had made a special card they were incredibly proud of. I told them they could keep their cards and do what they wanted with them. Both of them put them in their rooms for safe keeping.

It wasn’t just about crafting—it was about time together. No screens, no distractions. Just paper, glue, giggles.

Spellbinders really nailed it with this one. It’s beginner-friendly enough for little ones but includes enough variety and quality elements to satisfy even seasoned crafters. Whether you’re a grandparent, parent, or simply a holiday enthusiast, this kit makes it easy to turn an ordinary afternoon into something memorable and heartfelt.

Crafting with kids doesn’t have to be messy or stressful. With the right tools—like the Merry Moments kit—it becomes a chance to make memories, spark creativity, and share a little love, one card at a time.

So go ahead—pour some cocoa, clear off the table, and invite your little elves to create some merry moments of their own.
