–Coasters and Trivets
I love playing with Alcohol inks…on any substrate. I’m still taking classes from any source to get more tips and tricks in how this medium works. It is mesmerizing and is never the same twice.
At Christmas I decided to make some presents for my family by making coasters for my six kids…that meant 4 coasters for each family….24 coaster!!
Here are some pictures of the ones made then:
For this blog hop I thought it would be fun to expand a bit and add a trivet to the collection. I took the third set in the pictures above for the example and used the same colors to create the trivet. I used the Alcohol refills for the Altenew Artist Markers in colors of Sapphire, Persian Blue and Ocean Waves. Included with this was some Ranger Silver Alloy.
Here’s my guide to the finshed project. It isn’t hard, it just takes some time and patience for drying and waiting for the next steps.
- Obtain a ceramic tile with a light background ( I was actually lucky to find several at Habit For Humanity Restore for 25 cents each but they were terracotta in color.)
- Since my tiles were terracotta, I purchased some white gesso and painted it onto the tiles to seal and to create a white background;
- Using alcohol inks, 91% alcohol and some blending solution I went to town in covering the tile.
Here’s a speeded up video showing putting the color on the tile.
Once the tile was as I wanted it I let it dry overnight. Then set upon sealing the inks with resin, following the instructions on the package for mixing.
There are some tricks with resin
- have air be as dry as possible (air conditioning is helpful if you live in a warm, humid climate),
- tape the underside of your project with painters’ tape along the edges,
- before mixing the resin, turn some cups upside down to elevate your tile.
The resin is self-leveling so is will find its way around the tile and drip off the edges. Thus, with the painters’ tape underneath you can then just peel it off and the resin drips will come off also. If after 3 days of curing there are some rough spots along the edges you can sand them down with a fine sand paper. It’s easy to do by hand and you don’t need special tools other than the sand paper.
For finishing touches you can just glue some felt to the bottom of the tile itself or get fancier with a frame. I found a frame on Amazon that would hold a 6×6 tile and thought that would dress it up even more. I got a bonus that the frame also came with a tile…so now I have another tile I can use in the future. What a deal!!!
